Year five for the avocado trees and this year is the best yet for avocado set. But over the last few weeks quite a few fruit have dropped, some 5 cm long!
This photo shows the 25 or so that dropped this week. It may not seem like a lot but with only 120 fruit on 7 trees it's starting to add up.
I notice if I don't water the trees the day before a weather change from overcast to sunny, fruit tends to drop the next day. Avocados don't like clay soil which is all I have so it's a dance to ensure their shallow roots have adequate moisture levels in my heavy clay without drowning them. A good layer of leaf mulch helps, and I'll check the weather forecast more regularly.
